Gothic remake: A new journey begins – with respect for the original and a vision for the future
Developer Alkimia Interactive has given new insights into the Gothic remake. As part of a making-of series, the development team gave a further detailed insight into the creation of their ambitious project.
The remake of the cult classic will not only offer a complete optical revision, but also introduce systemic and narrative refinements, which should make the loved one a modern experience.
“Our job was to find out which elements should stay exactly the same as they are and which elements should be expanded,” explains Reinhard Pollice, Studio Director of Alkimia Interactive.
During the entire production, the developers were in a constant area of tension between respect for the original and a well thought -out extension with new ideas in order to make the experience even more captivating.
Gothic remake aims to stay true to the core history of the original and at the same time tackle existing problems: gaps in action, contradictions and logical inconsistencies have been carefully checked and rewritten.

The creation of a credible, lively open world is one of the central design goals of the remake. The team implemented a detailed simulation of a living world in which the characters follow their daily routines, with experience and react dynamically to events, even if the player is not around.
“We not only configure the houses or schedules of the NSCs,” says Javier Untoria, Lead Game Designer. “We create a living world with a lot of character.”
Another exciting part of the remake is the way the development team expands existing areas and is inspired by elements that were originally cut out.
The development team looked at areas that were empty in the original and filled them with life. From mysterious dungeons to hidden paths and deeper interactions with the orc culture-many of the historic aspects of the game get space to really shine.
