If there is a game that in the Xbox 360 generation has changed the way of looking at third-person games, it is undoubtedly Gear Of War. The Epic saga made its debut on Xbox 360 and immediately became one of the most beloved games by anyone who played it, the rest, as you know, is history.
It’s curious that Gears Of War was backed by an awesome campaign that you could play co-op with another friend or alone. But it is true that one of the pillars that made the success of the saga episode after episode was its multiplayer, a multiplayer that laid the foundations of a generation and which finally became indispensable game after game. at the first Gears Of War you know the importance of its multiplayer component, so imagine for a moment that it was canceled, as explained in a recent maintenance
Gears Of War multiplayer was about to be canceled
At that time, ours was a very small studio. Our team knew from the start that they wanted to bring multiplayer into Gears of War, but we knew we would be losing the battle dramatically against giants like Halo in terms of manpower to employ in the multiplayer space.
It was a real disaster because we were based on the most popular shooters of the time, like Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament. It’s a shame that these games work fundamentally differently from Gears Of War.
We decided to base everything on the cover mechanic, with maps full of forced passages and walls to lean on to keep the battlefield under control. Because in every Gears, it’s always been important to see what the enemy is doing, instead of rushing headlong and shooting wildly while jumping from who knows where.
Finally the team decided to modify the multiplayer experience and focus it on what was seen in the campaign, from that moment they were able to give what we knew later a game with insurmountable foundations they made from this first game that with each installment the multiplayer offered more and more possibilities.
