With Ara: History Untold set to release in just a few days, developer Oxide Games and publisher Microsoft are laying the groundwork for what promises to be a grand strategy game exclusive to PC and Xbox. In recent days, the game’s official YouTube channel has released additional content, including two new video dev diaries answering questions from the game’s community.
In one of the videos, Matt Turnbull, executive producer of Ara for Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios, chats with host “GamerZakh” about the game and answers questions from fans. One of the issues discussed is the game’s turn limit. One user asked if the game could last until someone conquered everyone, or if there was an artificial ending. Turnbull explained that, like other acts in the game, Act I, Act II and Act III have a definitive endingwhich is achieved when a certain percentage of nations have surpassed the technological eras of this act and reached the future era up to the technological singularity.
Oxide Games is very pleased to be working with Microsoft on this project.
Turnbull also mentioned that the game’s round cap, which is currently 1,250, is meant to give players the ability to play shorter or longer matches. This confirms that the game will offer a lot of flexibility in terms of length and playstyle. Additionally, Turnbull also said that there will be multiplayer between people who purchase the game on Steam, Windows Store, and PC Game Pass, allowing players to compete and cooperate with each other.
Regarding the meaning of the name Ara in the game, Turnbull explained that This is a topic that will be addressed in the game itself.. However, it is clear that the name Ara has a deep and symbolic meaning in the context of the game.
Just like the other acts in the game, Act I, Act II, and Act III have a final ending. And that final ending is the same as the other acts. When a certain percentage of nations have advanced beyond the technological eras of that act and reached the future era up to the technological singularity and ended up in the singularity era, once that is done and completed, that is what truly ends the game.
Microsoft has released real-time strategy games in the past, such as Age of Empires, but Ara: History Untold is the company’s first large-scale turn-based strategy game. Turnbull said Microsoft is excited “to have an incredible partner like Oxide to do this with.”
