How Jackbox Games took a popular party game and made a new remote play version

Back to The Jackbox Party Pack 3Jackbox Games has a social deception game called Fake it where friends and family pointed at each other, threw up their hands and accused each other of lying. At the beginning of the game, we instructed the players how best to sit and enjoy the game so that they had the best view of their fellow players. Now, in Jackbox Cheeky Packwe’re bringing it back, but is it possible to make this explosively fun game work remotely? Spoiler alert: Sure, it is!

Hello, I’m Tim Sniffen, the director of Pretend all night long. When we started developing this new version, one of the team’s greatest hopes (and a request we heard from Jackbox players over the years) was to make the game work in a purely remote environment.

Jackbox, fake it

Since the game is based on studying the other players closely to see who Fake itwe’ve made the player avatars (designed by lead artist Owen Watson) more present in the game, allowing them to raise their hands, point at each other, etc. All of the moments that would normally be performed by players in the room are done by selecting options on your controller and those actions are then reflected on the game screen.

We also put a lot of emphasis on the timing and order of actions when revealing things in the Remote Play version to ensure it’s easy to process all the information on screen. And both Same Room and Remote Play include the same turn categories, including one of our new ones, Emojional Damage (who doesn’t love deception through emojis?), so the game ultimately plays the same, even with the adjusted interactions.

This way, it’s not mandatory to have the camera on… although it’s always satisfying to watch the face of a person wriggling out of an accusation.

So even if you prefer to stay at home, you can still Fake It with the best of them! And for all those who are original Fake it Lovers… the original “in the same room” style of play is present in the Jackbox Cheeky Pack too. Because sometimes you just have to smack the person who calls you a dirty liar for the third time.
