On the way to the cafeteria in the NetherRealm Studios offices, there is a large poster of Ermac hanging on the wall. When I see it, I often remember how much he has evolved over the years. In the early days before the Internet, rumors about him often circulated and sparked all kinds of speculation, especially in the arcades. In the first Mortal Kombat In an arcade game, there was a diagnostic called ERMACS (short for “Error Macro”) that appeared under the number “Reptile Appearances” and “Reptile Battles”, and therefore detective fans assumed that there was a hidden character in the game must give. Over time, these rumors had taken on a life of their own and were ultimately the catalyst for Ermac’s eventual creation and inclusion as a playable fighter in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Since the character’s arrival, Ermac has always been a vessel for souls, using those souls to manipulate their energy for his own devious purposes. For Mortal Kombat 1, we wanted to evolve the visual representation of Ermac by leaning heavily on specific horror inspirations, and then explore the idea that Ermac was haunted by unique souls that he captured throughout his life. The Tormented Souls Collective includes: the Witch, the Old Woman, the Monster and the Soldier, each playing a key role in Ermac’s moveset. In Ermac’s classic lift special move, the witch’s soul bursts out of Ermac to lift the opponent and slam them to the ground. The idea of these unique souls manifesting during his attacks is a common theme we wanted to highlight.
For me, one of the most compelling aspects of designing and implementing Ermac was the challenge it set for us. The last time we saw Ermac was in one Mortal Kombat Game as a playable fighter was in Mortal Kombat XAnd since then we have been optically light years ahead. For us, this meant an opportunity to evolve the look of his soul energy to create intricate visual effects-based attacks that help sell the unique telekinesis power he possesses. The inherent challenge is to ensure that the visual elements are effective, harmonize well with the gameplay elements and are readable to the player. The design and visual effects teams are constantly working on this.
In terms of gameplay, Ermac stands out as a character with interesting combo potential and interesting routes, especially from the air. In terms of special moves, he utilizes a variety of his main special attacks as well as new additions Mortal Kombat 1
One of his new special moves is a mana shield, where one of his souls creates a shield around him, causing incoming damage to reduce his super gauge rather than his health. Additionally, he has another new attack where he violently launches souls upwards, allowing him to launch the opponent into the air and allow Ermac to dash out of them. Finally, one of my personal favorites and something players are dying to try out is a brutality we developed from Ermac’s Lift special attack, which is a clear nod to his Telekinesis Fatality Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Work on classic characters for a new one Mortal Kombat The game is almost a sacred responsibility, let alone one of the ninjas. I first joined the team many years ago injustice game and I will always remember the surreal moment when I first worked on Scorpion Attacks. This responsibility is a feeling that everyone in the team shares. We are all very happy to welcome Ermac back Mortal Kombat 1 I hope the players enjoy playing it as much as the team that worked on it did.
