On October 25, 2017, Microsoft decided to shelve Kinect 2.0. Its sensor showed great promise, but the company failed to sell it or gain developer support. I am not going to give you a look back at the reasons which led to this failure, because they are now well known to everyone. But if you want to know them exactly, I leave you an editorial signed by my colleague Pedro where tell you this sad story.
Today I wanted to make a little memory of the more than 50,000 entries published in Xbox Generation to save some funny news that I consider interesting for web readers. It is a somewhat anecdotal news, but it will certainly make you smile or make you feel old, which is good in both cases.
Failed games and conspiracies
The first is when a month after its announced death and the closure of production, without anyone expecting it, two games were announced for the device. These games were Boom Ball 2 and Kinect Funhouse, two absolute failures in sales which were also an economic blow for the studio, which decided to bet on the sensor even though it knew in advance that it would cease to be manufactured.
In the middle of the Bandersnatch series, conspiratorial users claimed that the series connected to Kinect if you ran Netflix from the console and that once inside, the device sent screenshots to Microsoft to spy on you, you and your family. Something which was quickly denied.
Ghosts, curious uses and Fortnite
Fortnite players had to disconnect Kinect because for some strange reason the sensor was hampering the game’s performance even though it had no specific function and was not using the sensor in the game. No one ever came forward to explain the reasons, but it went on for quite a long time, at least 2 years.
By the way, did you know that Kinect I chased ghosts and has it been used by teams specializing in this type of phenomena? You do not believe me ? Well, take a look at this editorial we launched 5 years ago. Aunque por suerte no es el unico uso que se le dio al sensor, as well as being used by McDonald’s to carry out pedidos en sus stalaciones mediante gestures (solo en Japon) y algunos de sus sensors fueron lanzados en un programa piloto en Manchester para monitorio a adults.
The last we know about the sensor is that it was disassembled and some of its technology was used for Azure Kinect DK and other Microsoft devices.
Ocuvera is using the Azure Kinect sensor to prevent patients from falling in hospitals. Using a combination of AI algorithms, the sensor can determine if a patient is about to fall and alert a nurse before the fall occurs.
