Magic: The Gathering, takes fans back to one of their favorite Ravnica settings. This time to reveal a mysterious murder. Our story begins after the Phyrexian invasion. With Phyrexia defeated, Ravnica is eager to “get back to normal.”. And what better way to show that the spirit of the people remains intact than a big party at the Karlov mansion?
The host of the event is Teysa Karlov, guild leader, legendary aristocrat and descendant of the powerful Karlov family. During the Phyrexian invasion, he saved many lives by providing information on the advance of the armies. Who could envy him a well-deserved party?
One of the guests at the party was an old friend Orzhov of Teysa, the heroine. Rich Planeswalker. After the Phyrexian defeat, Kaya returned to her former territories. He attended the party reluctantly, assessing the scene and looking for any reason to leave. In addition to celebrating the return to normalcy, the party at Karlov Mansion served to cement a new status quo, welcoming members of the Ravnica Magical Research Agency.
The Agency is a new force in Ravnica society, created to ensure that guild politics do not affect the investigation of real crimes.. Or, at least, that they affect them as little as possible. One of the agency members is the junior investigator Kellan. He’s eager to follow the clues, wherever they lead him. The evening went as planned: the opulence of the party drowned Ravnica’s recent misfortunes in splendor and excess. But the celebrations were cut short when a body was found lying in the changing room on a pile of coats. It was Zegana!
Detective Mechanics
One of the characteristics of this new collection is the number of playable mechanics that we will find. These mechanics aim to recreate the detective’s setting. So, we offer you a little summary of what will follow.
Investigate It’s a mechanic that returns in this collection and immerses you in the feeling of being a detective and will make you delve deeper into the events. It allows you to create a Clue token, which is a colorless artifact token that you can sacrifice to draw a card.
On another side, Wear costumes gives the game a feeling of mystery; Everything can be hidden under your opponents’ exposed cards. Disguise allows you to throw cards face down, hidden so that no other player knows what they are.
Pay (3) to cast this spell, and it becomes a 2/2 creature with rebuttal (2) and no other abilities. You can turn it face up, as long as you have priority, by paying its Disguise cost. This happens immediately, does not use the stack, and there can be no response. That 2/2 creature your opponent thought they could safely block is actually an angel, perfect for hovering over and getting a free lifelink.
Like the sagas, Cases are a new mechanic that allows you to experiment with different stages. as the mystery unfolds, like a detective would. Crates are enchantments similar to Quests, but with three abilities. The first is still active. The middle one is a condition for “solving the case” and the bottom one is a reward once you solve it.
Two new playable mechanics
Suspicious is another new mechanic, allowing you to fix your detective eye on any creature that appears to be up to no good. “Suspect” is a label that can be applied to a creature.
The SUSPECT help token is placed on it. Suspicious creature is threatened and can’t block. Once a creature is suspect, it remains suspect until it leaves the battlefield, or another effect makes it more suspect.
Finally, we have Gather the evidence another new mechanic. You can solve a mystery in your head, but nothing is as important as concrete evidence when it comes to bringing the guilty to justice. To gather evidence, exile any number of cards from your graveyard with a total mana value exactly equal to or greater than the number listed.. Some cards even unlock alternate effects upon entering the battlefield, “if evidence has been collected.”
In addition to playing the new set, there are 12 puzzles and a meta-puzzle to solve. You can find the first puzzle in the presentation pack and then discover more in products like game packs and bundles. Starting today, players will be able to visit RavnicaDetectiveAgency.com to find more puzzles and the final final puzzle. Finally, we remind you that this collection will reach the world of Magic the next February 9, 2024.
