Fans of the Halo TV series believe that Master Chief should put on his helmet.
Last week, Paramount+ showed the official trailer for the second season of the Halo TV series. And while the trailer promises an exciting and action-packed season, it’s Master Chief’s missing helmet that many fans are talking about.
In the trailer, John-117 is seen several times without his iconic helmet. You can even see the face of actor Pablo Schreiber, who plays Master Chief, in action sequences.
There are several reasons for criticism because he never takes it off in the video games.
In the Halo subreddit, a user asks in the top post, “How could no one in the marketing department see that this was a bad thing?” The reason for the question is the poster for season 2, in which Master Chief is also not wearing a helmet.
The issue came up as early as 2022 when the helmet was removed from Table 1. At that time Schreiber said:
“One thing I learned very early on is that there are as many different opinions in the Halo universe as there are Halo fans. So it’s obvious that you can’t please everyone. But what I would say is that we create an entertainment experience that is tailored to the medium it is intended for.”
“When you’re playing a first-person shooter, the way a character is developed is very different than what’s necessary when you’re making a long-form television series,” Schreiber added. “If you want to go on this journey with your protagonist, you can’t take the audience with you in a long story without having access to the character’s face, which tells you what she’s feeling, how she thinks about everything. This access to a character’s emotional life over time is what makes you empathize with a character and feel connected to them.”
“I’m sorry, but this is the only way to tell a long story on television. I fully respect the opinions of those who disagree with this. But it’s a pretty basic starting point when it comes to making a quality TV series.”
