Ubisoft has fended off a mega-hack, according to a new report.
After the devastating Insomniac Games leak, in which terabytes of data were stolen and published, a short time later Ubisoft was apparently also the victim of a hacker attack, which was however repelled.
The user “vx-underground” claims X Twitterthat on December 20, an “unknown threat actor” entered Ubisoft’s systems and remained there for approximately forty-eight hours.
During this time, this user had access to SharePoint, Confluence and Microsoft Teams, as well as other internal systems. Despite hours of access, all that has appeared seems to be a series of screenshots that reveal little.
According to media sources, the hacker tried to steal about 900 giga bytes of data, but failed when he was removed from the systems by Ubisoft. It goes on to say that the data was related to Rainbow Six Siege.
It’s worrying that more and more high-profile studios like this are being hit by ransomware attacks. Security in the field of video game development is becoming increasingly important, especially given the sensitive and valuable data held within these companies.
The efforts of Ubisoft’s cybersecurity teams to repel the attack and clean the systems are definitely commendable. It’s great to hear that they responded quickly to prevent possible data loss.
It is not yet known exactly what content was obtained, but vx-underground seems certain that the attempt was unsuccessful.
Such incidents highlight the need for companies, particularly in the gaming industry, to take increased security measures to protect themselves from such attacks. It is hoped that more studios will improve and strengthen their own security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
