Following Hideo Kojima’s departure from Konami, many considered the Metal Gear franchise to be dead. Even more so considering that the first game in the franchise without the Japanese creator in charge was the forgettable Metal Gear Survive
But the IP is still that of Konami, so it is possible that the Japanese company wants to exploit the franchise in one way or another. In fact, the possibility of a remake of the first installment has been rumored for some time. It’s a less risky possibility for the company, so it would make sense to bet on it before embarking on a new installment.
Would Metal Gear be back?
Now, and to further fuel the rumours, Noriaki Okamura has commented to Japanese magazine Famitsu that this is going to be a year with many announcements from Konami, including a “long-awaited reveal”. I can’t think of anything more anticipated than the return to life of Metal Gear, since we already have several Silent Hill announcements. Perhaps the remake rumors ended up being a trial balloon that proved useful for the Japanese.
Even so, I recommend keeping your expectations moderate; Konami has quite a long history of disappointment, and the announcement could end up being anything, even a new Pachinko. In fact, I remember not too long ago, the person who promoted the rumors about the franchise’s revival, confessed that he made it all up.
