More than 1,900 jobs are being cut at Xbox, Bethesda, Activision and Blizzard.
Yesterday we learned that Microsoft had overtaken Apple and once again become the most valuable company in the world, with a market capitalization of $3 trillion. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to have stopped The Redmond company will cut more than 1,900 jobs at Xbox, Bethesda, Activision and Blizzard.
In an email from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer (obtained via an anonymous source according to Windows Central), Phil wrote this “made the painful decision to reduce the size of our workforce by approximately 1,900 positions out of the 22,000 people on our team”
Current Blizzard President Mike Ybarra is also leaving the company, as is Blizzard Senior Vice President Allan Adham.. In an internal memo to Blizzard staff (obtained by The Verge), Matt Booty wrote that “Mike Ybarra and I have been discussing his future and some of his personal passions for some time. As many of you know, Mike spent over 20 years at Microsoft. “Now that he has completed the acquisition as president of Blizzard, he has decided to leave the company.”
The oft-talked-about “Project Odyssey,” Blizzard’s long-awaited entry into the survival game genre, has also been canceled.with Matt Booty saying “As part of this direction, Blizzard is ending development on its survival game project and will shift some of the people working on it to one of several promising new projects Blizzard has in the early stages of development.”
Many expected the worst to be over, as 2023 saw record job losses in the video game industry. Unfortunately, the new year seems to continue the trend, with video game companies continuing to make layoffs despite record profits.
