KRAFTON, Inc., the South Korea-based developer of the battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds, today announced its 2021 preliminary results.
The key growth drivers this year were PUBG: Battlegrounds and PUBG Mobile. PUBG: Battlegrounds posted revenue of $96.1 million in Q4 2021. For the full year, PUBG: Battlegrounds reported revenue of $333.6 million.
In late 2021, KRAFTON prepared to transition PUBG: Battlegrounds to free-to-play in January 2022 to ensure a sustainable live service structure. The development of various paid products in the game has increased the average revenue per user (ARPU) of PUBG: Battlegrounds by more than 4 times compared to 2020. This contributed significantly to the strong sales growth compared to the previous year.
PUBG Mobile recorded revenue of $1.18 billion in 2021 and revenue of $253.7 million in Q4 2021, making PUBG: Mobile the top-grossing mobile game. The top three factors contributing to revenue growth in 2021 were increased sales of PUBG Mobile, growth of Battlegrounds Mobile INDIA and the release of New State Mobile.
Alongside the results, KRAFTON announced that the company will continue to focus on strengthening its gaming capabilities and accelerating new business opportunities in 2022. The company aims to further solidify its competitive advantage by expanding its game publishing capabilities and streamlining game operations while appealing to gamers with new titles.
A new game with the Codenamed “Project M” by Unknown Worlds, the developers of the Subnautica series, which KRAFTON acquired in 2021, is scheduled to be released for Early Access in 2022. Project M is a unique turn-based strategy game set in a sci-fi world. The Callisto Protocol, a survival horror game developed by Striking Distance Studios, is also scheduled for release in 2022. In addition, new mobile titles including Road To Valor: Empires by Dreamotion and Defense Derby by RisingWings will be launched.
KRAFTON also plans to launch a new production program called “The Potential” and actively pursue new business areas such as Deep Learning, Web 3.0, NFT, VR and more. Especially in the field of deep learning, KRAFTON is developing a platform for audio-based user-generated content (UGC) that uses text-based language AI.
The company will also build a high quality Metaverse with a content creation tool powered by the Unreal Engine. KRAFTON has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NAVER Z and ZEPETO to develop a new Web 3.0 and Non-Fungible Token (NFT) project aimed at building an NFT metaverse platform. Through partnerships like this, KRAFTON aims to invigorate the NFT-based creative industries while also focusing on the development of technologies that can help create a create-to-earn (C2E) ecosystem by collaborating with strong partners.
