Imagine playing Halo: Combat Evolved, Bungie's classic sci-fi shooter, in virtual reality. That's precisely what user LivingFray has achieved with their free HaloCEVR mod, allowing players to experience the game in a whole new way. Although the original game was released in 2001 for the original Xbox and in 2003 for Windows, this mod is an opportunity for fans of the game to replay it in a different way.

The full VR conversion mod offers six degrees of freedom (6DoF) for aiming, allowing players use weapons, throw grenades, use picture-in-picture glasses, and use both hands to hold weapons with VR controllers. Also available are motion-controlled melee attacks, a flashlight that can be turned on by pressing the headset, the ability to crouch in the motion-detected world, a distinct user interface, and remappable controls. These features are impressive, especially since some of them aren't seen in high-level VR games today.

To play the original Halo: Combat Evolved for PC with this mod, you must have patch 1.10 installed. However, this patch is not easy to find, as it was released on CD and never made it to digital format. Additionally, multiplayer is not officially supported and the developer warns that issues may arise during testing. Despite these challenges, the mod presents an exciting opportunity for fans of the game to replay the game in an innovative way.

The mod's developer, LivingFray, explains that he decided to create the mod for the original version of the game instead of Combat Evolved's Halo: The Master Chief Collection version. to simplify development. “This mod is my first attempt at reverse engineering and modifying a closed game engine which requires learning how to decompile, analyze and patch the x86 assembly.“, he explains. “By focusing on an older title, I have an easier project to work on since I don't have to worry about two more decades of updates and technological advancements.“.
