If memory serves, the first Alan Wake had some sort of arrangement with Microsoft, but the franchise was and always has been owned by Remedy. In the old days Canceled Alan Wake 2 hardware leak that Microsoft didn’t want to continue and the Finns ended up dropping it.
Interest in relaunching the franchise has always been on Remedy’s part, but it lacked resources and priorities. In fact, there are a lot of nods to the tormented writer that we saw in Control or Quantum Break for example. Last year the studio dropped that maybe we could see more of the game … the statements were as follows:
