The joint conference of Xbox and Bethesda has shown a lot of promising games for Xbox and PC and is one of the best of this E3 2021. In addition to long-awaited titles such as Infinite halo Yes Starfield, they also had the chance to shine in notable indies like Replaced, of Sad cat studios.
Replaced is a 2.5D action platformer sci-fi game that blew us away with a beautiful 16-bit aesthetic perfectly combined with modern lighting techniques. The artistic direction reminds a little Octopath traveler of Square Enix because it looks like a diorama. The adventure takes place in an alternation of the 80s where we embody REACH, an artificial intelligence trapped in a human body against his own will. We will explore the mysteries of Phoenix-City and its surroundings from the point of view of this AI learning to be human in a society that has deteriorated. Everything is ruled by corruption and greed. Those in power see humans and their organs as nothing more than a coin.
While this is the studio’s first title, the retro sci-fi art design of Replaced oozes charm on all four sides. The game combines cinematic platforms, pixel art, and action combat with a deep and compelling dystopian storyline. The character and set animation is the best we’ve seen in a long time in a title with these characteristics. It’s very heartwarming, again, to see Xbox partnering up with smaller independent studios and giving them the opportunity to shine at these very important events.
The game does not yet have an official date but will be released on Xbox and PC in 2022. In addition, subscribers to Xbox Game Pass they will have access to it at launch.
