Reputation saved studio from closure

Arkane Lyone's reputation saved the Dishonored 2 studio from closure, says a former designer.

When Microsoft planned to clear Arkane in May last year, it could have hit not only the studio in Austin but also the headquarters in Lyone.

But the good reputation for sophisticated games saved them from this. This is the opinion of Julien Eveillé, who formerly worked as a designer at the Dishonored game series studio.

Although Dishonored 2: Legacy of the Mask was more expensive to make than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, its qualities saved the studio from closure, as Eveillé told PC Gamer.

“It was a bit weird and strange. I think when Bethesda looked at the numbers they thought, 'OK, Skyrim sold so well. And it cost less to make than Dishonored 2'. So they asked questions. When looking at management spending, it makes sense to ask these questions: 'Why should we continue with you?' But we knew we had some kind of stamp of quality because we were making perhaps the most sophisticated games in the entire Bethesda catalog,” says Eveillé.

According to Eveillé, the studio's good reputation, but also the new management by Dinga Bakaba after the departure of founder Raphael Colantionio, contributed to its salvation.
