The Forza Horizon series is more successful than everyone else, says the former co-founder and CEO of Playground Games.
Three years ago, Gavin Raeburn founded the developer studio Lighthouse Games. Previously, he headed Playground Games, which he also ran out of baptism and is on everyone's lips through the Forza Horizon series at racing game fans.
Together with publishing Director Alex Bertie, he spoke to GameSindology about Forza Horizon and the development of the first own racing game, which one describes as groundbreaking.
According to Raeburn, the racing game market is very healthy and Forza Horizon is even played by people who actually don't like the genre.
According to him, the Forza Horizon series was so successful that it spent the sales of Gran Turismo, F1, Need for Speed and The Crew together.
Raeburn said: “The market for racing games is now very healthy, it is very good, it is doing well. But if you look at the market, you look at Horizon … The number of people I spoke to played Horizon and said: 'I didn't think I liked racing games, but I love Horizon' – it was a huge success.”
“If you look at the sales of this game, Gran Turismo, F1, Need for Speed and The Crew together. That was before Horizon was brought to the Playstation. That is huge. I think that has had an impact on the market because all other racing game developers now copy a lot from the Horizon formula.”
Raeburn did not provide precise information about what the Lighthouse Games' racing game will look like. In the interview, he only said that although they are based on Forza Horizon, innovation was the goal.
“I would say that we don't do Horizon. If I wanted to do Horizon 6, 7 and 8, I would have stayed with Playground. [Wir] didn't want to do that – [wir] wanted to do something new. And that's exactly what we're doing now, ”said Raeburn.
