SEGA launches new initiative around popular classic franchises. New games for the Crazy Taxi, Golden Ax, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi and Streets of Rage brands are in development!
As part of the Game Awards 2023, one of the world’s largest annual video game industry events, SEGA announced an initiative to produce brand new games for some of the publisher’s most popular franchises.
New games are currently in development for five of the company’s older franchises: Crazy Taxi, Golden Ax, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage are being remastered for modern audiences, as we previously reported.
“In recent years, Sonic the Hedgehog has broken new ground for SEGA. The revitalized franchise reached a whole new audience in ways we could only dream of in the past. “We want to build on this success and revisit several older franchises to bring them to an even larger audience worldwide,” said Shuji Utsumi, Co-COO of Sega Corporation and CEO of Sega of America.
“The announcement is just the beginning of our franchise initiative, and we hope fans of all ages will eagerly await these games and other projects in the years to come.”
The upcoming projects span a range of genres, are currently in various stages of development and will be released over the coming years. The first of these games will be based on the following older franchises:
- Crazy Taxi Franchise: a crazy high-speed driving adventure where you have to navigate traffic in an open game environment to get passengers to their destination before time runs out.
- Golden Ax Franchise: a hack-and-slash series with a melee focus in a fantasy world full of beasts, swords and magic.
- Jet Set Radio Franchise: a franchise that combines action-packed traversal of Tokyo with skating, self-expression through graffiti, street culture and rebellion.
- Shinobi Franchise: a series in which enemies are fought in a mix of side-scrolling action and challenging environments using ninja shuriken, ninjutsu, special attacks and much more.
- Streets of Rage franchise: a beat ’em up series that combines fast-paced fist fights with cool music in a lawless urban area.
More details on each of the upcoming games, including official game titles, release dates and platforms, will be announced soon.
