In 2019, the head of Xbox Game Studios suggested putting SONY out of business by buying game content.
In a battle for subscribers and against Sony as a competitor, Matt Booty proposed in 2019 to put Sony out of business through investments. The head of Xbox Game Studios wrote an e-mail to Xbox CFO Tim Stuart. In it, he suggested spending money to buy game content. They are in a unique position to put Sony out of business.
Booty also wrote, “If we think video game content is going to matter 10 years from now, we could look back and say, ‘It would definitely have been worth losing $2 or $3 billion in 2020 to avoid a situation where in Tencent, Google, Amazon or even Sony have become the Disney of games and own most of the valuable content’.”
As Booty further stated, Sony is the only one that could compete with Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft has a lead of two years and 10 million subscribers in this regard.
In a statement to The Verge, David Cuddy, Microsoft’s general manager of public affairs, said: “This email is three and a half years old and 25 months before the announcement of our acquisition. It relates to industry trends that we have never followed and has nothing to do with the acquisition.”
