We analyze Spacebase Startopia, the RTS from Realmforge Studios, a strategy game in which we will manage our own space base
Today we bring analysis for fans of real-time management and strategy games, as well as sci-fi. Spacebase Startopia, title developed by Realmforge and published by Kalypso Media, will put us in command of a space station to meet the needs of all kinds of alien races. Where we can create a large ecosystem of leisure and services to be the benchmark of our galaxy. A game full of humor in its story and a gameplay demanding to satisfy experts in the genre.
Our trip to Spacebase Startopia It starts with a warm welcome to the resort explaining the benefits of it. Paying a humorous tribute to Keanu Reeves’ famous “You Are Breathtaking” at Microsoft’s E3 2019 conference and a few other jokes, he clarifies the tone in which our adventure will unfold.
Once the presentations are made and unloaded on the menu, we will have at our disposal several game modes. As a first contact It is advisable to go for some short and concise tutorials that will explain the playable mechanics of Spacebase Startopia. Where we will have to manage specific actions within an already operational base. After learning the basic functions, the single player campaign will see that we are implementing them from scratch.
Know our space base through its campaign
The Spacebase Startopia campaign begins with comic book-style thumbnails that give context to the situation and existence of our base. As a result of some space misunderstandings, various alien races have started an absurd, centuries-long war. What i’m leading Consorcio RFS. to develop the Startopia project, the creation of a meeting point for these races to coexist in peace. Under the tutelage of VAL, an AI that will guide us in our adventure based on sarcasm and contempt, we will get to work as managers of the space base.
The Spacebase Startopia is a donut-shaped station that has three levels to manage different types of resources. The first level focuses on the management of the site’s resources and defenses. Thanks to our work droids, we will create the base buildings for the base to function. They will also be in charge of collecting the resources generated in order to improve the performance of our station.
The second level of our base is reserved for leisure, which will keep the happiness of our visitors in high settings. Hip-swinging clubs, cat cafeterias, attractions that get our adrenaline pumping, or lottery machines will ensure that space issues are forgotten for a while.
Finally, the third level is dedicated to our botanical area. Where through different biomes we can generate resources that allow us to continue to develop all the activity of our station. Each level of the base can be enlarged horizontally by opening doors located on either side of each sector.
Leisure and work, hand in hand
As soon as we open the doors to our base at Spacebase Startopia, visitors will start pouring in by the dozen. There will be many races who will want to take advantage of our facilities and escape the harsh life of space. Each type of building that we create in our base, must be managed by a specific type of race for its optimal development.. For this, we can hire our staff directly from the list of visitors registered in the database.
Spacebase Startopia’s economy is a balance between the energy generated by the use of our facilities and the cost of these and of the working staff. Therefore, we need to create buildings and hire employees at a gradual pace so that the happiness of our customers does not decrease because they have forgotten some aspect of our services. Sometimes, our buildings will improve and we will be able to choose two branches which will offer different advantages and disadvantages with which to prioritize the style of growth we want in our base.
One of the ways in which we will produce energy quickly will be through our recycling plant.
The happiness of our guests and any future workers will be the key to the production and proper functioning of the base.. To do this, we must create a service station for the intimate hygiene of the latter, air purifiers not to burden the environment and various decorative objects to brighten up the look among so many metal structures.
Combat system and other game modes
Spacebase Startopia also has a combat system that plays like the classic RTS genre.
During our games, it is possible that a horde of raiders will want to end the peace and good vibes of our station. To do this, we need to have our droids and mechs ready to stop the incursion and not panic among our visitors. The combat system is quite simple and it will not be a real headache in itself. This does not mean that we have to be prepared for possible incidents.
Finally, after completing the campaign, which has three difficulty levels, we have several online modes available. In my case, I’ve been looking for someone to play with for over 15 minutes matchmaking, without any success. We can also play the campaign in co-op with a friend, in a mode where invitations are available and thus avoid the connectivity issues that I encountered in the console version. And if you want to unleash your imagination without pressure or goals, you have a free mode to play at your own pace.
Final conclusions of Spacebase Startopia
Overall, Spacebase Startopia seemed like a good management and strategy game. Although there is a very big but, its poor adaptation to consoles. I’ve always thought the genre of RTS and management is very much about the convenience of a keyboard and mouse for your enjoyment. While many other titles like Two Point Hospital, for example, I think they’ve adapted well to order mapping. The real problem with this title is surely its own interface itself, which is too designed for the use of a mouse and is quite boring in the control.
Each menu and submenu opens with a different combination of buttons (RB + A, RB + B, RB + X, LB + Y, etc.), which makes it quite uncomfortable and even with getting used to, we will have to face with the arduous task of moving with the cursor on the screen through the paste of the order. Out of curiosity, I saw some gameplays in its PC version from different content creators and the difference was appalling. So I find it quite difficult to recommend the console version of Spacebase Startopia.
On the other hand, the game’s AI is not dazzling due to its efficiency and it is somewhat difficult to understand what we are doing wrong in the early stages of the game. Although at least its sense of humor makes the playable experience quite entertaining and fun. In short, if you are a lover of the genre, you might want to give it a try, although if you have a PC that can move this game, I highly recommend you go for this version.
