Watch the feature-length documentary War Game about STALKER 2 Heart of Chornobyl here.
Under the title Wargame: The Making of STALKER 2 This feature-length documentary offers an in-depth look at the emotional journey of GSC Game World, a Ukrainian video game developer with nearly 500 employees, as it explores the challenges of developing the highly anticipated sequel to its 2007 first-person shooter STALKER amidst the outbreak of war in the Ukraine masters.
What began as an ambitious project evolved into a deeply personal and historic undertaking, born under unimaginable circumstances.
Made in collaboration with Xbox and directed by Andrew Stephan (Power On: The Story of Xbox), the film may be one of the most heartbreaking making-of films ever made.
He tells the true stories of people who are faced with the reality of war on their doorstep.
The documentary covers many themes, from capturing the essence of Chernobyl and Ukraine, to cultural independence and game development in a collapsing world, to personal and collective resilience and overcoming loss.
During this process, STALKER 2 becomes more than just a game – rather a lens through which a new reality is viewed.
The developers deal with their dual roles as creators and survivors and transform their game into a powerful one Symbol of resistance. It is said that when the foundations of existence are shaken, art takes on profound meaning.
“This film isn’t just about the hardest game development ever. It is also about resilience and the unyielding human spirit in the face of unimaginable challenges.”
“It’s about the meaning of creation in a time of destruction… a defiant act of creating something meaningful in the face of adversity,” says Andrew Stephan, film director.
“For me personally, STALKER 2 is the biggest and most complex video game of my life. It was ambitious from the start, but has proven to be the ultimate challenge in itself. It’s extremely important and extremely personal, and it’s a game made under the most stressful circumstances imaginable.”
“These include the pandemic, the resettlement, the cyberattacks and, above all, the war that is tearing our homeland apart.”
“I wish the war had never happened. I wish none of this had ever happened. But it happened. And we are grateful for the opportunity to share all of this with the world, because the world should know. This is us. This is our story,” said Mariia Grygorovych, Creative Director of STALKER 2.
