We take a look at Super Meat Boy Forever, a sequel loaded with changes to the playable aspect, but which maintains the essence of the original.
Today we have to talk about one of those headlines that are capable of making you sweat a big drop, but keep you in control for a moment. An ode to perseverance, specially dedicated to an audience with a broad threshold of tolerance for frustration. Super Meat Boy Forever returns to the fray to offer us thousands of challenging difficulty levels, complete with a great sense of humor and adorable visuals.
Super Meat Boy Forever, title developed by Team meat, is a direct sequel to Super Meat Boy, originally released for Xbox Live Arcade in 2010. A game loaded with changes in its playable appearance, but one that maintains the essence of the original.
This time, we can play as any member of our ruling couple, Meat Boy y Bandage Girl, since the beginning of our adventure. Who will face their sworn enemy, the Dr Fetus, who kidnapped your daughter Nugget.
The aesthetic of Super Meat Boy Forever abandons the pixel art of its first opus to dress with some graphics cartoon most sympathetic. During the early stages of each world, we get to enjoy some humorous cutscenes and lots of nods to other classic video games.
New mechanics, same sensations
How I have already advanced in the introduction, Super Meat Boy Forever is mainly recycled becoming a endless runner. This is probably the most noticeable change from the original game, which makes it even more complicated, although it is possible. Although since Team meat wanted to be somewhat benevolent and each phase has several checkpoints.
The speed at which our character is moving has a constant pace, and every time we hit a wall we will change direction. At hand we will have three mechanisms that complement the automatic movement, with the novelty that we can now hit enemies on the screen.
The first and most basic of the mechanisms is the jump, which varies according to our pulse, becoming more and more demanding over time. Then we have a chance to double jump, which is essentially a hyphen forward that hits enemies. This resets every time we hit the ground or hit the hit on an enemy, allowing us to do longer jump chains. Finally, we can slide along the ground which in turn helps us dodge and also hits enemies. The slide can also be used during a jump, changing the trajectory of the jump.
All of the Super Meat Boy Forever gameplay is supported on these three legs, but it doesn’t end there. During each of the 5 worlds that make up the adventure, the game adds new environmental mechanics which vary the gameplay considerably
Patterns and level design
After having overcome the 6 phases that make up each “world”, it will be time to face the last bosses of Super Meat Boy Forever. Boss design is all about combat, without neglecting the platforms and the frenzy of dodging deadly obstacles on the screen. As if it were a Souls game, bosses will change their attack patterns as we lower their health bar.
The design of each boss is totally different from the previous one, and the difficulty of each one increases considerably. Unlike normal phases, here we will not have checkpointYes, so you have to learn the patterns of the bosses little by little, without losing patience along the way. These will be the most difficult parts of the game, where surely we will accumulate more deaths in our counter.
Regarding the design of the levels, Super Meat Boy Forever has over 7000 different levels. Obviously, we won’t have to play them all to be able to beat the final boss and enjoy the game’s credits. Team Meat was in charge of generating codes with small illustrations that are used to complete the phases of each level. So, every time we start a new adventure, a new code with different levels will be generated. Give meaning to “Forever” which closes the title of this episode.
Finally, I want to do a little review of the artistic section. Visually, the game is magnificent, its aesthetics cartoon makes the characters and cutscenes look good in production. In fact, Nugget, the daughter of Meat Boy and Bandage Girl, is simply adorable. The soundtrack is also quite sweet, full of riffs of electric guitar and mixed in some electronic music themes. All in all, it is very varied and perfectly accompanies the pace and intensity of the game.
Super Meat Boy Forever Final Conclusions
We will close this analysis of Super Meat Boy Forever, without a doubt a title that I really enjoyed. If you like high difficulty platform games, like Celestial, or or Elliot, you can’t miss this new installment. Completing a first round of the game took me about 5 hours. In which I died a whopping 1,637 times, which is 5.39 deaths per minute or what is the same thing, dying every 12 seconds.
Even so, I have to say that it was almost impossible for me to let go of the controller despite the difficulty of the game, and that is a very good sign. Now I have to play the levels designed by Team Meat which I couldn’t test, which gives the replayability of this title a great value. Its price, now slightly reduced these days, is all the more reason to give it a try.
Super Meat Boy Forever
- Exquisite control and very difficult difficulty

- The story, while a very good one, is not particularly long. But it is provided by the amount of levels that to replay it
