Night has come in our new gameplay video, so grab your flashlight and join us as we explore the secrets of a dark zone. Take a closer look at different types of infected, face a fugitive and try to get through it in one piece. But that is only possible if you follow our instructions. Are you ready?
One thing is to know your enemies. Another to know their weaknesses. We’ll cover both just to be sure. So who are all of the monsters you will encounter in The City? Let’s say you got infected. At first you might think it was just flu as the symptoms are very similar. That is, if you didn’t live in a post-apocalyptic city hit by a deadly virus where you knew all too well it was more than that, and your race against infection would begin.
You would most likely also have a biomarker – a special bracelet that shows the stages of your illness and how close you are to the tipping point. If you don’t find enough UV light or anticancer in time, the symptoms will get worse and worse until you can’t even speak. Then your biomarker would turn red and there would be a direct path to becoming a refugee. And once you’ve turned around, there’s no going back.
After you hit the turning point, what you wanted most – UV rays – becomes your worst enemy. Stay in the sun and you will become a wreck of a monster, a walker. You will lose all remnants of your consciousness and mindlessly roam the streets until you die of the light.
But it doesn’t have to get that bad, although it’s rather relative, because if you let the virus progress in the dark, you will become the strongest monster of all – a fugitive. Fast, intelligent, and deadly, he’s the only thing you never want to meet. Our first tip should now be very clear – stay in the UV light and use it against the monsters. It protects you from both the infection and the infected.
But exposure to light is just one factor that defines what monster you become. There’s more, like the chemicals that were dumped on The City in the past. They accelerated the progression of the virus in the sick and caused their body to change too quickly, which in turn led to various mutations.
For example, if the virus infects someone’s vocal cords, they could turn into a howler, an infected person who is both too scared and unable to fight a human. Don’t let him discover you. Another product of the chemicals is the demolisher, whose body became extremely large, especially hands, and its skin hardened with stone-like tissue. He can storm or hit the ground with his fists to create some sort of shock wave, as well as throw immensely heavy objects, so watch out for those flying boulders. You have to rely on your agility against the demolisher.
But there is also the banshee – smaller but so clever that you can’t see them coming. She is quick and surprises you, attacks you from the rooftops. If you can fight them, your strength is your best chance. And then some monsters mutated in unpredictable ways.
The revenant has an odd ability to buff and summon infected nearby who came with the substance from the growths on his back. It’s rather unusual. You can only find it in certain places and only at night. But we’re not sure if looking for him is such a good idea. Unless you’re ready to fight an army.
So the next tip would be to never step on the chemical clouds in The City, and if you are fighting those who did, adjust your tactics to exploit their weaknesses. And since we are in the “No Entry” type, this should of course be followed: Do not walk through the dark zones during the day. Then all the infected are there and hide from the sun. It is wise to use this time to explore the streets and return to the dark zones at dusk when they have gone hunting. However, it doesn’t mean you can be careless as there are still some monsters, even fugitives, lying around and running around. Then our improved stealth mechanics come into play. Do not rush to think about your next steps and you will be able to do it without a horde of the infected chasing you.
And it is worth trying your luck in the dark zones, dangerous as they may be. They are full of valuable prey, with inhibitors probably the most valuable of them all. Well, these chemicals are what you actually want. They improve your skills and allow you to fight better, jump higher, and run faster than any other person. But it also has a darker side. You will have to find out for yourself if you can survive long enough.
