Welcome to the world of Nerf legends! I’m Mihai Preda, the studio manager here at Fun Labs, and we look forward to making a video game based on one of our favorite toys for kids (and adults, if we’re honest).
Nerf legends is an FPS where you wield Nerf blasters in a science fiction future. You’re a hopeful candidate who has entered the Nerf Trials, a glove-style competition that seeks to improve the blasters. The blasters are leveled and fun to use, and your goal is to get through the winding courses to defeat robots, puzzles and eventually the Nerf masters. The story focuses on the idea of proving your skills with the blasters and making it to the end of the competition against the mysterious grandmaster. If you do, you will win the ultimate prize of becoming a Nerf Legend.
We took inspiration from the blasters to incorporate some unique gameplay elements. For example, anyone who has played with a Nerf blaster before knows that this will eventually lead to foam arrows on your floor. We liked that as a game concept and lifelike, when you shoot arrows in the game they are scattered all over the ground and you have to pick them up quickly to refill your ammunition. This idea of blowing up and picking up darts makes for some interesting game strategies. For example, when enemies shoot you, they basically give you ammunition that you can pick up and shoot back, and vice versa.
In addition to playing with real nerf blasters, we also looked around other video games for inspiration. We have quite a few people in the studio who play a wide variety of shooters and other games. No single game was a direct inspiration for our work in Nerf legends, but the FPS genre has a lot of excellent games to think about.
We also have a lot of unique game mechanics that you don’t see often in other FPS games. Early in the prototyping phase, someone came up with the idea of adding trampoline-like bouncy pillows, and it was something everyone immediately enjoyed. We played around with this mechanic quite a bit. Sometimes they are only used to jump to higher platforms or some other part of a level, and sometimes they are used in puzzles. For example, imagine trying to hit opponents or other targets while jumping through the air, or using a jump pad to jump in the middle of the action. That gameplay eventually led to the idea of flipping a trampoline on its side and we created what we call accelerators. Accelerators propel you into the level like a cannonball, making it a whole new way of thinking about traversing. These mechanics, in turn, have inspired some of our level designs.
In many ways, the blasters are the stars of the game, but there’s no template for what the Nerf universe should look and feel like, and that gave us a lot of freedom to head in some interesting directions. In Nerf legends You climb castle walls, walk through bays full of futuristic Viking ships, catapult yourself between cliffs in a jungle mountain, speed through a gigantic spaceport and much more. There’s just so much variety in the levels, and none of it is taken too seriously. For us it was all about the fun factor and creating levels where the use of blasters was fun. We hope that this will surprise and delight players.
Nerf legends has a full single player campaign, but there are also many online multiplayer game modes. Solo Nerf Out and Team Nerf Out is our Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, but without death. Players in the game are marked after the victory, hence the naming. Nerf Siege is our King of the Hill game mode and then there’s the Golden Dart mode. Golden dart is like capturing the flag, but it has an interesting twist. It’s a team play mode where players score by tagging other players, but the team scores when they catch the golden arrow and use it to shoot and hit a target that moves around the map. The player who carries the golden arrow will lose the arrow if it is fired or marked, so teammates must try to protect it.
The Nerf brand and the Nerf blasters really are the perfect toys to adapt to a video game. We have done our best to stay true to Nerf core values and increase the fun of playing with the blasters in real life while pushing boundaries to create an enhanced Nerf experience that would be impossible in real life. We look forward to jumping and playing online Nerf legends
