giants, postrelease, shoulders, update

Our small team is on its way shoulders of giants Earlier this year, and while the response from Xbox players has actually been better than we ever expected (at the time of writing, our user rating score is over 4.5!), there’s still a million things we’re improving want.

You can find these first big improvements in our new the world is alive 1.2 Content Update. Check out the trailer above and read on about our approach to keeping updates fresh for our co-op roguelike.

I firmly believe that the surest way to improve a work of art is to find its weakest elements and try to turn those into its strongest. That’s exactly what we set out to achieve with this long-awaited update, working tirelessly to merge player feedback with our own to make some significant changes to our already-released title. Here’s the story:

Upon release, our team was happy shoulders of giantsis a improvisational battle and a robust progression system. However, as the reviews came in, a trend emerged: players feel that the worlds you explore and the mission objectives you pursue can be kind of the same after a dozen hours of play.

We all deal with criticism differently, but for me, the criticism that really comes to mind isn’t the loud, awkward, and hateful kind – it’s the subtle kind that says something you know deep down, that it’s true.

We and our fans both wanted to take the level environments and mission types to the next level with our first major content update. We started by taking our less popular mission types and redesigning them from the ground up.

Shoulders of Giants character

Our combat-oriented “Butterfly Collector” mode (trust me, the name makes sense if you’ve played the game) has been turned into an exploration-intensive “hunt” mission, about using strategy to face tougher opponents. Our very repetitive “Storm” mission type, which once required players to walk around a dense thunderstorm in a dark, procedural world in search of an exit, is now a much more guided experience, centered around defending weather probes from enemy ones Attacks – for most of our team, this is their favorite mission now.

But that wasn’t enough. To make the surfaces of these procedural planets significantly more unique between runs, we’ve introduced a new planetary anomaly system that can completely change how levels behave – adding meteor storms, indoor arena battles, and low-gravity battles to take you out into space , and one extremely silly thing I don’t want to reveal here.
