The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most infamous stories of American horror. Drenched in the desaturated tones of Texas summer and vibrant with the sounds of metal on metal. How do you bring all of this into an interactive space and create an experience like no other in modern gaming?
Gun Interactive are no strangers to asymmetric horror multiplayer games, having created one of the blueprints for the genre Friday the 13th: The Game. But just like every element of Friday the 13th: The Game The approach had to adjust the franchise to near-obsessive levels The Texas Chainsaw Massacre draws on the same cornerstone of authenticity and adds another goal: innovation.
This approach to authenticity relates not only to the film but to the region itself. Complete with photogrammetry and references sourced from the locations and places featured in the iconic film. The team traveled to and around Austin and photographed the panoramic sky, every flower, every texture, all the little things that make up the bigger picture feeling
Studying the film, region, tone and mood are all part of authenticity for Gun. But what about her Sound? If you’ve seen the original 1974 film, you’ve surely noticed that the film’s sound design is layered with awkward dissonance and industrial noise, which are woven together to create a musical form unlike anything you’ve heard before. Enter a device unlike anything you’ve seen before: The Apprehension Engine.
Wes Keltner, CEO and President of Gun, was looking for a rare tool in this world, the Apprehension Engine. And with the help of Sumo Digital’s Lead Audio Designer Ross Tregenza, they set about building something that could deliver the sound of authenticity The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All the photogrammetry and research, now coupled with building this unique soundscape to play with, create tension and release from, how does it all go from abstract to interactive? How is this interactive entry also innovative? Not happy with a new one skin In our previous foray into the asymmetric horror genre, innovation became another cornerstone, another pillar of the team at Gun.
Team-based three-vs-four gameplay and stealth as the primary defense mechanism for victims was a great place to start building on, iterating on, and uncovering the core loops within The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The one-sided game structure, the power imbalance between The Family, complete with a chainsaw wielding a threat and a group of victims banded together desperately to simply survive, that’s what it would ultimately be about. The deck seems stacked against you, but you’re still fighting, you’re still fighting to break free from family. These concepts didn’t just tick the box for something else, they shaped the game itself.
Our gang of victims all have full and detailed backstories, reasons why they are the way they are, and now you finally have a chance to see just a glimpse of how that plays out in game. The creation of these characters was hugely important to Gun, and every aspect of them had to be fully developed and sculpted to inform their traits and attributes in the game. Knowing that we have five capable characters available for a four-person team means synchronizing with the other players around you to either double their efforts or make up for their shortcomings. Working together is the most powerful tool at their d isposal, but single-handedly, they are all capable of waging one hell of a fight in their own unique and distinctive ways.
And so the stage is set. Maria Flores is missing and local law enforcement appear to have stalled their search. Her younger sister Ana and some of Maria’s friends from college go on a search mission to find Maria. Play as Julie, Leland, Connie, Sonny or Ana and take on The Cook, The Hitchhiker and of course Leatherface. From the iconic family home to the gas station to a local slaughterhouse, remember to be quiet, turn off the lights and stay in the shade.
