A new report predicts that only one other next-gen console will make it alongside Nintendo. What that will be depends on various factors.
The company DFC Intelligence has been focusing on market research and analysis of the video game sector since 1994. In a new report they are now looking forward to the next generation of consoles.
Their prediction is that only two consoles will see massive success in the next generation – and one of them will be from Nintendo.
That leaves only one spot left in Sony's big race against Microsoft.
As the DFC report states: “There is not enough space for more than two large console systems. Sony or Microsoft will have to struggle mightily in a distant third place – depending on which company gains momentum faster at the start of the generation.”
However, the report does not see either company as a clear winner, since Sony has the larger regular customer base, but Microsoft has taken on the role of the largest game publisher due to its acquisitions. Factors will be the price, the release date, but also the portability of the consoles, it is said.
Overall, players can hope for rosy times from next year until the end of the decade. After a few weaker years, there will be a lot of momentum for development studios large and small thanks to the new console from Nintendo and hotly anticipated releases like GTA 6.
As recent comments from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella suggest, they're already preparing for an emergency by moving away from the idea that the console should be the only place to enjoy Xbox.
