Leonardo, Raphael, Michellangelo and Donnatello return with a healthy dose of fun and nostalgia in TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.
Tribute Games there Dotemu take us back to one of the most beloved television and video game franchises of the 90s, the fabulous Ninja Turtles. The authors of the return of another mythical saga like Street of Rage, take a step aside and leave the development of this TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge to the French studio Tribute Games. An ode to the classics beat them arcade cabinets which brings together the magic of then and the spectacular nature of today.
In a way, we could treat TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge like restarting TMNT IV: Turtles in Time from 1991 which we didn’t know we needed, well, actually we did. A title that has aged very well in playability and is still a visual delight today. But Tribute Games, excited to use the character designs from the 90s TV series, did great visual work with characters and settings that are more beautiful than ever.
the ninja turtles are back
As soon as TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge begins, we’re left gobsmacked with the spectacular intro of the game with the original theme and animation of the TV series 90s. We can start our game by choosing between six playable characters: the four turtles, Splinter and April O’neil. Each character has their own set of moves and some attributes they split their stats into: range, speed, and power.
characters with Raphael oh Glow They are the most powerful Michelangelo there April The fastest, Donnatello Who has more reach? Leonardo is the most balanced. Although it is not that there is an abysmal difference between them, since the combat system is universal.
we will have an attack button with which to perform combos hitting enemies consecutively. Each character will have a single super attack which we can use to fill the super bar with combos. We will also have a jump button and dodge button which can be combined with attack buttons to extend combos. Another offensive option will be the catches, which are done automatically approach our enemy and they have several finishing options. And finally, a fake button to fill a great bar.
youn very satisfying combat system from the first minutes (even pressing buttons) and that little by little we will discover the pleasure of executing long chains of combos duly. No difficult combinations, rather rhythmic sequences according to the set of movements of our character. Since, even if an enemy is out of combat, combos can be extended before they hit the ground to fill the super bar. A very fun mechanic that will take us many times in search of the infinite combo.
Through the streets and gutters of New York
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge splits and one totals all 16 phases by which we can browse your map in story mode. Who has a spectacular design, a real visual pleasure. Each phase has a series of challenges and collectibles that we can complete at any time, since we will have complete freedom to move around the map to play the previous phases that we have overcome.
We can change characters at any time of the game without it affecting our progress. In reality, each character levels up independently, unlocking bonus health, more super bars, and more super attacks. This progression system only adds more resources to our offensive system which, once mastered its basics, is appreciated.
In terms of level variety, each level has unique designs and different playable mechanics, classic vehicle phases could not be missed. In that sense, it’s like we’re enjoying a different 16-episode season of the ’90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Of note is the variety of bosses, mini-bosses, and secondary characters that TNMT: Shredder’s Revenge has. I was able to remember more than one and more than two characters that were in the head of this boy almost 30 years ago but that my memory had decided to forget, a most “pleasant” situation.
As for the putties, a large percentage of the enemies will be Foot Clan minions and the occasional robot. Of course, we will see Foot Clan members of all colors, equipped with different weapons and different attack moves. Although it may be somewhat repetitive in the medium term, we appreciate not lengthening the game unnecessarily or with filler invented enemies.
Pizza tastes better in company
Although one of the real successes of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is that it was designed to play with friends from minute one. Another point of nostalgia that many of us veterans will appreciate more as we already did with the old titles in the arcade cabinets or in the living room at home.
Multiplayer mode allows a total of up to 6 players simultaneously, either locally or online. To date, we have not been able to test online services as they are not yet available, although local multiplayer works perfectly. Add more waves of enemies as the number of players increases. This, yes, it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of our character due to the explosion of on-screen visual effects, which doesn’t mean it’s always extremely fun.
Beyond Historical modethat we can keep replaying to complete their challenges and get the ending with each character, we will also have a Arcade mode. This mode is the classic arcade game mode. Limited lives without saving progress, the ultimate experience for those looking for an extra stage of difficulty.
Finally, highlight the artistic conception, at the level of the characters and the decorations, is a real madness
