Trifox review for Xbox Series X.
Granted, many of us started out in the world of video games with the boom of 3D platformer titles that came out between the late 90s and early 2000s. Games like Crash Bandicoot oh Ratchet & Clank They marked a before and after in the genre with unforgettable adventures. Now the independent developer Interactive light fish and the editor Big Sugar wanted to give us the essence of these works so dear to trifox, a game with good ideas and some details to polish. But to better explain this, we will start with our analysis.
WHO TOOK CONTROL!!!???
Trifox is a cartoon action adventure inspired by the golden age of 3D platformers. We will put ourselves in the role of a quiet fox who, one day, is robbed by mysterious looters when entering his house. Pissed off, frustrated and unable to watch our favorite TV show, our duty will be to retrieve our gadgets traveling through four dangerous worlds and hunt down these heartless thieves.
As you can see, his story is very simple and as the game progresses there is no change in this regard which makes it more interesting. There’s also no real reason for the heist or for us to disagree with the game’s antagonist, a pirate wolf who searches for treasure and always manages to escape at the end of the level.
Skill is better than strength and vice versa
But the particularity of Trifox lies in its mechanical piece. at the beginning of the adventure we can choose between three classes: guerrero (Close combat), dry (ranged attacks and crowd control) and engineer (use of inventions and gadgets for combat. In addition, each of them will have a own attribute of movement: sprint, teleport and helicopter, respectively.
As we get coins (which we can find by destroying boxes, pots or enemies), we can unlock new attributes or attacks for our character.
The starting game makes us choose between a class. But after a few minutes it will cease to be relevant, because with coins we can manage to make another totally different one buy its characteristic attributes. For example, we can choose to be a warrior and buy the magician’s movement attribute first. This option will give us the opportunity to test the playstyle of the three types, create hybrid classes. If we feel like it, we can be a magician with machine guns or even a warrior who only has magic attacks. Experimenting with different combinations to find the style that best suits your way of playing is one of the playable points that I enjoyed the most in the title.
Controls and camera to tweak
One problem with the Glowfish game is its controls. Our character will have two movement speeds: walk if we move the left stick and run if we keep it a few seconds longer in the same direction. The problem is that movement feels more like we’re sliding instead of walking or running. The braking is sometimes not always precise and we will hit the enemies without realizing it.
On the other hand, the jump also has things to improve. Although the resource of indicating with a circle where our character will fall (typical of many current 3D platformers) has been included, collisions with landing points are not too polished. Sometimes we slip over edges that we physically couldn’t fall off.
The camera doesn’t help here either. Many times, especially in combat, we will switch to screen angles that the camera does not reach
nostalgia novetera
The level selection in Trifox is almost copied from the excellent trilogy of Crash Bandicoot. After completing the tutorial at the beginning, we will appear in a kind of central hub where we will have access to several portals that correspond to the different worlds. In addition, in this room we can buy new skills for our fox, try them in a training area or consult our game statistics. Each time we complete a phase or a level, we always return to this point of reference.
Each world will have several phases that you will have to finish to move on to the next one. All of them will also hide secrets, hidden paths and collectibles for those who like to complete everything 100%.
Its design is also original, although they are quite guilty of having the same theme per world and it ends up being somewhat monotonous. However, they differ from each other with their own unique challenges and puzzles that help alleviate visual repetitiveness.
Although the combat is somewhat basic, it is essentially enjoyable. Except for the aforementioned control issues, it’s fun. We control our character with style management two stick shooter
Finally, it is worth noting the design of the puzzles. Without being extremely complex, they are fun and clever. Something that will force us to explore the corners of each level in search of switches or objects that activate mechanisms to open doors or move platforms.
A very lively fox
Respect to technical partwe are in front of a title with a graphic style cartoon which in motion looks remarkable. The soundtrack doesn’t stand out too much, although it has some good thematic melodies that help us dig deeper into each world. trifox has no type of dubbing, which is a shame, because I think giving the characters voices would have given them a lot more charisma and personality. In the game we will have texts in Spanish, although we do not need them at all, since all the information is simply visual.
Ultimately
Trifox is a tribute to the golden age of three-dimensional platform video games. While it’s far from perfect due to its simple story, lack of mobility, and storyline repetitiveness, it’s still quite a fun title. Its original system of customizable skills and classes makes us enjoy every fight and encourages us to experiment with new combinations. Moreover, visually, it will attract a lot of attention thanks to its colorful style. cartoon.
