Hey Xbox fans!
We’d like to share some great news with you. From last Friday January 13th you can play UnderDungeon on your Xbox consoles. We are all very excited and happy about the release. So if you haven’t heard of this title (how is that even possible?!), I’m here to save the day and tell you a few words about what’s interesting to learn about in this piece of indie retro code you who its creators are and how it all began. Also a good question is why we chose Friday the 13th as the release date… Well read on!
And by the way, nice to meet you, I’m Chris.
Simple doesn’t mean simple
But what is that UnderDungeon Anyway you ask? It’s a slick, quirky dungeon crawler and classic RPG in which the protagonist is Kimuto, a cute sword-wielding kitten who faces the tough world of work on his first day at a new job. Sounds exciting? Okay, how about the fact that this is a totally retro experience with sharp 1-bit visuals and catchy music and sound effects? Not convinced yet? Okay, what if I told you that there’s tons of humor here, interesting characters to interact and chat with, and gameplay twists from other genres (like… arcade and rhythmic levels, or even 3D sections )?
What are you thinking now, huh?!
I know what you’re thinking. What’s this, the paean to the game that looks like it’s taken from the GameBoy era? (That was rough) But let me tell you this UnderDungeon is a great example of a game that doesn’t seem like much at first glance, but it shines and shines when you try.
Also, today, with dozens of new titles being released almost every day, it’s easy to skip over something that could be really interesting and playable, especially if it’s aimed at a specific audience from the start. So that was the case here. subdungeon At first it felt like “just another retro miniature,” but then we became so captivated that we decided to help its creators release it.
Retro souls last forever
The game was created by Josyan, a solo indie developer previously working on games such as Ceroptin invasion and Tamiku. He was also involved in the work on the Alex Kidd in MW make new. He decided to team up with José Ramón “Bibiki” García, the composer and sound designer, to create a project together that would pay a great homage to the retro classics (such as The Legend of Zelda or dragon quest). Old gameplay formula meets modern and polished execution here, both in gameplay and in audio and graphics, so it’s a very good opportunity to enter the old-school gaming pit.
While writing this article, I took the opportunity to ask Josyan himself for a brief comment on the game’s concept. Here’s what he said to me:
“Actually it’s a little experiment, when I started it was more like a blank slate to put mechanics, jokes and moments that I liked. I also think it’s a very personal project as it embodied many of my own ideas and messages. I’m inspired by all the classic dungeon crawlers, but the game has so many different mechanics and minigames that I’d be lying if there wasn’t a lifetime of good gameplay moments. I hope that everyone who enjoys searching for mysteries beyond what meets the eye will like the game and of course the classic players too!”
So your task will be to traverse dungeons and rid them of vicious monsters, fight big bosses, collect items or solve different puzzles. However, this is only a small part of what has been prepared for you, as you can see from the text above. And here is the hidden beauty of UnderDungeonbecause under the guise of simple, little games there are many surprises.
See you underground!
