If Microsoft, Apple and Google have their way, fingerprint and face ID will soon replace the classic password.
to die FIDO Alliance was founded to increase the compatibility of authentication methods while reducing reliance on and reliance on traditional passwords. Apple also joined this association at the beginning of 2020 and has now agreed with Microsoft and Google to expand the FIDO standard and to establish universal “password-free” authentication.
As Allianz pointed out, logging in using classic passwords represents a fundamental security risk, since users very often use simple passwords or the same ones in different portals. The new standard aims to solve this problem by offering apps and websites a uniform and secure option across different devices and platforms.
All three companies agree that despite improvements in password management and 2-factor authentication, life has been made much more secure, but there is still room for more security.
Although both Apple and Google, as well as Microsoft, already support the FIDO standard, you still have to log into each app or website on each device before the new login method can be activated and used. So they plan to use the standard for all their products.
This means that in future users will be able to use their FIDO login data completely independently of the device, app or web browser and – even more importantly – they can also use it as a single sign-in option. By eliminating the need to enter a password, users are of course also less susceptible to phishing, since instead of a password, for example, a fingerprint is stored.
It is not yet known when the new standard will also reach the Apple product range. However, it can be assumed that you will learn more about this at the Worldwide Developers Conference from June 6th to 10th.
