I’m not very good at Cuphead.
For me, mastery of this game is at a level I’ll never reach and leave my mouth open as I watch players perfect its many subtleties. The game is undeniably full of charms, from its gorgeous hand-drawn animation to its stellar soundtrack, but its difficulty has always limited my time with it.
Thanks to the addition of Ms. Chalice, a new playable character who brings her own abilities like double jump and dash parries, this could be the edge I need to give this modern classic another chance.
That’s not to say Ms Chalice is some sort of “easy” mode when she arrives Cuphead – The delicious last course DLC coming June 30th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. All bosses and levels will continue to be difficult and require great skill to master and defeat. But think back to all the times you perished in the original game. Wouldn’t it have been great to double jump over an obstacle or have a slightly easier way of parrying pink orbs to help build your Super? For many, including myself, that fine line might be just what we’ve been looking for.
If you played the original game, you may already know Ms. Chalice as the legendary Chalice you meet early in your adventures. Now as a fully playable character in Delicious last courseyou can take them on a new series of adventures through an uncharted inkwell island filled with new challenging bosses and play through all of the original game’s locations.
In addition to her aforementioned original movesets, her character is also made up of entirely new hand-drawn animations – there are no Cuphead or Mugman reskins here. Cuphead is a classic run-and-gun action game with a heavy focus on boss fights. Inspired by 1930s cartoons, visuals and audio are carefully crafted using the same techniques of the era, ie traditional hand-drawn cel animation, watercol or backgrounds and original jazz recordings.
