If you are a Windows 11 user, you probably don’t know that recent versions of the operating system allow you to open TAR, 7Z, RAR and other file types without the need to download third-party apps. However, what you may not have known is that the upcoming 24H2 version of Windows 11 will take this feature even further, allowing you to not only open but also compress files in formats like 7Z and TAR, and to specify the compression ratio, among others. .
But you don’t need to wait six months to take advantage of this feature. Improved file support is coming to Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, meaning you’ll soon be able to take advantage of this feature without having to wait f or the next big update.
Now available in beta versions and soon in stable versions of Windows 11
A user named PhantomOfEarth discovered that the latest Windows 11 beta contains a feature ID that allows you to enable TAR and 7Z compression in File Explorer. Once activated, you can right click on a selection of files, click “Compress to” and select the desired format. You can also click “More Options” to open a wizard with additional functions, such as compression method or level.
While Microsoft has yet to officially announce these file support improvements for the beta channel, let alone the stable release, recent updates have shown that the new features don’t stay in the beta channel for long and are quickly moved to stable versions. This was the case with Start menu ads and new lock screen widgets.
If you have a PC running Windows 11 build 22635.3566, you can enable the new Archive features with the ViVeTool app. Simply download the application, open a command window as administrator and type the command “vivetool addconfig 36354489 1” to enable the feature. Then restart File Explorer and you’re done.
