Microsoft is already testing a new option for operating system boot menu. The American company realized quite late how inconvenient it was to display the list of applications in a drawer organized in list mode in alphabetical order, because when you have a large number of applications it starts to become a problem.

I’ve always been a fan of the tile mode of previous versions of the operating system, it made it much easier to locate applications or highlight favorites.

Windows 11’s new grid menu is awesome

So they’re starting to test a new grid-based Start menu. This new way of presenting applications It is introduced in build 22635.3420 and gives the user a much clearer and faster view of their application list. In some cases, the gain is such that you don’t even need to scroll down.

This new Start menu is in beta, that is to say it is not open to the general public and it is possible that it will undergo modifications before being accessible to everyone. Perhaps it’s even possible that it will never reach a stable release if Redmond isn’t convinced by testing.

So you can try the new Windows menu

If you like what you see and don’t want to wait for the final version, if it comes at some point I’ll let you know how you can try it now. Although yes, you will have to use a tool like Vive Tool which modifies the Windows registry.

This option can only be enabled if you are using build 22635.3420 and later, otherwise it will not work.

  • Download ViveTool from GitHub.
  • Unzip the files to an easy-to-locate folder, such as C://.
  • Run Command Prompt as administrator and open the folder containing ViVeTool files using the CD command. For example: cd c://.
  • Type vivetool /enable /id:48433541,48433706,48433719,48468527,48468541 and press Enter.
  • Now type vivetool /enable /id:47205210 /variant:2 and hit Enter.
  • Restart your PC.

Keep in mind that enabling this feature in testing has some drawbacks, for example you won’t be able to pin any apps at the moment.
