Microsoft has taken a liking to selling advertising in spaces where you wouldn’t expect to see an ad. For example, it already does this with Xbox, where it reserves part of the dashboard to display various advertisements. Even though raising the torches may not be a big deal, The truth is that the user should be able to choose freely.
Today we know that in Insider build 22635.3495 for beta channel members, those in Redmond started showing ads in the Start menu. These advertisements would initially target only members of this channel and in the United States.
Fortunately, if we don’t want these ads, they can always be easily disabled
It is not very clear what the real and final scope of all this will be, we only know that commercial organizations will not see this type of advertising. It therefore seems more aimed at the general public and not at the private and public business sector.
As for Xbox, the advertisements displayed are “Recommendations” of applications from its store, and It’s unclear whether developers pay for this space
- Press Win + I keys on your keyboard to open the Settings app.
- Select “Personalization” from the left panel.
- Scroll down and click “Start”.
- Turn off “Show Recommendations” for tips, app promotions, and more.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Microsoft has decided to display advertisements in its operating system. You already had to cringe from time to time when it showed ads in the settings menu, when it announced 365 or OneDrive promotions, or when Edge started showing ads as soon as you opened it.
