All of us who subscribe to the catalogs of streaming Series and movies, we know how the competition between these services works: each of them wants you to spend the maximum time on its platform and forget the rest. And that led Google TV to come up with a new strategy: don’t get out of there not even to watch TNT.
This is what it is looking for with its new offer in which it will offer up to 800 free channels, integrating news, entertainment and complementary services such as Pluto TV, Plex TV or Tubi. Now that more than one are unsubscribing from Netflix, there’s a battle to be the new favorite place on TV.
All without leaving a single service on your TV: Google’s ultimate goal
This new Google TV offer will integrate channels such as FOX, CBS or NBC and yes: for now it will only be available for the United States, although there will be Spanish-speaking channels. Google knows that these channels are also accessible from the TV itself “in the traditional way”, but if it offers them from its own application it will be more likely that users won’t leave it
The problem Google may have in achieving this is (besides general user habit) compatibility. Google TV is not available in tvOS (although it is available in iOS and iPadOS on the App Store), so in Mountain View they have to prepare this same app for tvOS if they want to reach everywhere.
Another question worth asking is whether Apple might pursue this same strategy internationally. Let’s take it to the extreme: can you imagine accessing content from Spanish channels such as Antena 3 or Telecinco via tvOS? That’s what Google wants to do in a way.
It remains to be seen if something like this will spread to countries other than the United States. The obstacle is not technical but licenses and agreements with broadcasters, who will obviously want a slice of the pie. For the moment, it will be necessary to check if this strategy works well for Google.
