2024 got off to a bad start for what was one of Google’s most ambitious projects. We are talking about Google Assistant, its voice assistant that aimed to change our lives through voice commands that made it unnecessary to use screens and access menus to do what we wanted. Today in EL ESPAÑOL – El Androide Libre we explained how Google Maps for mobile will be affected by the removal of an important function related to Google Assistant.
The arrival of generative AI was a hard blow for this assistant whose future is already starting to be uncertain. In just a few weeks, Google Assistant went from being Google’s crown jewel to practically disappearing from our lives. The next change will affect Samsung TV users
Consumers will therefore have to opt for the two other options offered by Samsung: its own assistant, Bixby, Amazon’s Alexa
Google has decided to move resources to Bard, its generative AI alternative to ChatGPT, resulting in the removal of Assistant features and changes to how it can be used by other platforms. And it is one of these changes that is the reason why Samsung had to eliminate Assistant support from its televisions, available since 2020.
Actually, this is no surprise; Samsung has already removed Google Assistant from new Smart TV models released in 2023, but until now older models could continue to use the assistant as always. This will change from March 1, 2024
- All Smart TV models sold in 2022
- All Smart TV models sold in 2021
- QLED 8K and 4K models sold in 2020
- Crystal UHD models sold in 2020
- Lifestyle models (Frame, Serif, Terrace and Sero) sold in 2020
Samsung mentions “a change in Google policy” to justify the removal of Google Assistant, it is therefore not a case where one competitor “sabotages” another. The decision is up to Google and will likely affect TVs from other brands in the coming months; although at the moment competitors like LG have made no mention of changes regarding the Assistant.
