Tuesday Layerx Labs published its observation on Tuesday on a new phishing attack which originally targeted Windows users, but can now be found on Macs. Phishing attack attempts to get the user username and password by making the user believe that his Mac is compromised.
The attack involves false security warnings that appear when browsing the web. The alerts seem to indicate that the Mac has been “compromised” and “locked” and that the web page seems frozen to increase the meaning of a compromise. A window appears to be incited the user to enter the username and password of his Mac, as well as a phone number to contact for “support”.
Layerx Labs provided a screenshot of the phishing attempt, although the attackers can change the alert to make it more convincing. He has several revealing signs that he is false, such as design that does not comply with Apple style and the incorrect style of the name “macOS”. igamesnews called the phone number in the screenshot at 11 a.m. Pacific and received a message indicating that they were not available and to recall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., so it is a false number that no one responds.
Layx Labs declares that users have inadvertently concluded these attacks by creating striking faults in the URLs in the browser. These URLs deceived users on domain parking pages compromised with the phishing attack.
The phishing attack initially focused on Windows users, but Microsoft, Google and Mozilla have implemented new safety features in their browsers who have effectively blocked the attack. This made the attackers turn to Mac users.
How to protect yourself from web phishing attacks
The easiest way to protect yourself from this attack is to check the URL you have tapped in your browser. Activate the sites you visit frequently so that you don't have to type the URL each time. In some cases, you can use a search engine, enter the name of the place you want to visit, then click on the link after looking at the URL it goes. For example, type “igamesnews” in the search engine you use, then click on the designated link on www.iGamesNews.com. In this way is not as effective, but if you create a typo, you will see it in the search and Google will direct you in the right direction.
Apple publishes security fixes via updates to the operating system, therefore installing them as soon as possible is important. If you are using a third -party browser, igamesnews has several guides to help you, including a guide to find out whether or not you need antivirus software, a Mac virus list, malware and Trojan horses, and a comparison of Mac security software.
