Foldable phones are here to stay. What seemed at first to be a simple experiment turned out to be one of the most promising innovations of recent years. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or the OnePlus Open are among those devices that prove their worth once you have them in hand, and it’s something that more and more users are discovering.
But we would be lying if we said that this technology is completely mature. And no one knows this better than Samsung Display, which is the maker of most of the flexible displays used in mobile phones, including those on its “sister” Samsung Galaxy. On the occasion of CES 2024, the company has advanced some of the advances
Perhaps the most striking prototype is the “In&Out Flip”, a version of the Galaxy Z Flip that opens both inside and out. The Flip is a “flip” phone, which takes up very little space when closed, but offers a full-size screen when opened.
The question Samsung asks is: what if we could continue to open the mobile phone? The result is a mobile that we can use from any angle; If closed “upside down”, the inner screen suddenly becomes the outer screen, and Samsung has confirmed that it can continue to be used, even if the mobile phone is technically “closed”.
This screen, which can be both interior and exterior, would make the Z Flip’s exterior screen useless, which results in a thinner device; In fact, we would have two external screens, one on each side, thus increasing the possibilities. Samsung has not confirmed whether the “In&Out Flip” will become a commercial product; For now, it’s just a prototype, but it wouldn’t be surprising if a model with a similar approach appeared, whether from Samsung or one of its customers.
These types of devices are possible thanks to advances in reducing the thickness of flexible displays, which Samsung has demonstrated in several prototypes. The company is also working on rollable screens and has presented a prototype screen which, when expanded, it is five times the size of a normal device. In other words, we can have a classic mobile phone and expand it to the size of a tablet when we want to watch videos or work with office applications, for example; The future Galaxy Z Fold is rumored to use this type of screen, leaving behind the current large interior screen format, but at the moment this has not been confirmed by Samsung.
