Android Automotive is the version of Android for vehicles found in a few cars today, although it is not necessarily exclusive to four-wheeled vehicles. It has just been released on KTM brand motorcycles with an 8-inch screen.
While Android Auto runs on the mobile phone and is projected onto the car screen, Android Automotive is integrated into the car (or motorcycle). It’s open sourceso that everyone can use it in its version without Google services and applications.
Android Automotive on a motorcycle
The beginnings of the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM date back to 1934, but this tradition contrasts with new technologies. The company announced that it would integrate TFT screens and Android Automotive in their next launches high-end motorcycles.
So far we have seen a handful of motorcycles with Android Auto support like the Honda Gold Wing or Harley Davidson’s Road Glide, but integration of the full operating system, Android Automotive, was even more elusive.
Today, the manufacturer KTM wants to change this with its new anti-glare and anti-fingerprint TFT screens with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, which can be used with or without gloves
This screen will integrate the offline browsing, although the system supports eSim and GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. Android Automotive is an open source operating system that can be completely modified at the manufacturer’s discretion. In this case it is about adapting its use to a motorcycle although it is technically designed for cars.
With Android at its core, Android Automotive does not imply that it has Google Play or Google Services, in which case Google chooses to call the vehicles as supporting Google Built-in for Cars, instead of Android Automotive. At any rate, Android now has a new place to live after having conquered cell phones, tablets, televisions and cars: motorcycles.
