Android OTAs are just the beginning: new things are coming to Android mobiles on different fronts, and for the past few months Google has been keeping us more or less informed about what is changing in our mobiles through these less traditional means: Google Play Services updates, Google Play system updates, and updates to the Play Store app itself.

What’s new in Google Play Services?
We start with Google Play Services updates, which are some of the most mysterious because we often don’t even know if they have been updated or not. During the month of January, no less than three updates for Google Play Services: versions 01.23, 02.23 and 03.23.
When it comes to news, Google highlights traditional internal developer fixes and improvements, although there are other more interesting sections related to password manager or device discovery. These are all the news that Google mentions, although this does not necessarily mean that you will have them active on your mobile:
- Bug fixes in account management, security and privacy, system management, diagnostics, and utility services.
- Support for device discovery when the screen is off.
- Google Play Games profiles are supported in more cases.
- Password Manager allows you to save passwords by adding a personalized note.
- Improved password autofill experience.
- Enhancements to Developer Services for Connectivity, Localization, Context, Machine Learning, AI, Maps, System Management, and Diagnostics.
- Updated the platform’s QR code reader so you can select an existing photo and added support for Matter and UPI codes.
What’s New in System Update
Along with updates from Google Play services, Android phones come with some critical system components that can be updated quite easily, using Google Play. This is what Google calls the Google Play system updates. In the January monthly update, the news focused on fixes and internal improvements, as you can see below:
- Bug fixes in account management, security and privacy, system management, diagnostics, and utility services
- Updates to improve system management, usability, and services that improve device connectivity, performance, network usage, privacy, and security.
What’s new in the Google Play app
Google’s app store, the Google Play Store, also gets regular news and improvements, updated without us having much control over it. For the Google Play 33.5Google noted the following changes:
- Bug fixes in account management, security and privacy, system management, diagnostics, and utility services.
- New features to help you discover the apps and games you love.
- Optimizations to improve download speed and stability.
- Ongoing improvements to Play Protect to protect your device.
- Performance improvements, fixes, and improvements to security, stability, and accessibility.
