In one of the most controversial decisions he has taken in recent years last week, he announced the end of the Kindle book downloads; And even worse, it gave users very shortly to make a backup copy of their purchases on the platform.
Whenever we buy a book on the Amazon Kindle, the company Offer a copy in AW3 formatWho can be downloaded to our computer, then copy in the memory of our Kindle device using a USB cable. Originally, it was a faster way to get our books, when wireless connections were not trustworthy.
Currently, most Kindle users simply download the book directly on your device when you buy it; Although there are some who prefer to download the backup to always have it available, that they have an internet connection. Unfortunately, This function will disappear tomorrow, February 26, 2025And we have less than 24 hours to make a backup of our books.
When the deadline is filled, we can continue to read the books we have bought, but only on our Kindle devices; The option to download books will disappear from the Amazon website. Therefore, if we want to make a backup, we must do it now, before it is too late.
To download our Kindle books, we must first enter the Amazon website and, in our account, enter the “Content library” section; We can also directly enter this link. Then click on the “Books” section, which will display on a list all the titles we bought on the platform.
Finally, we must click on “more actions” in the book in question that we want to download and click on “Download and transfer via USB”. A menu will open in which we must choose the device in which we will read the book, then click on “Download”. A file with extension .azw3 will be downloaded, which we can save on our personal storage forever.
Although Amazon did not explain the reason for this sudden and harmful change for users, everything indicates that it is an attempt to fight hacking. Although AW3 files are associated with our account and our device (this is why we must select it), it is not very difficult to “crack” this protection and Programs such as caliber are able to convert the file to other formats More open in EPUB, compatible with other books and electronic players.

However, this fight against night hacking to users who just want a backup copy of the books they have legally bought. This is not the only opportunity when The fight against hacking more than legal users than piratesAnd no one doubts that the piracy of books will continue despite this decision.
In addition to maintaining a backup of our books, the download is useful to avoid censorship (Amazon has erased the books of its platform and prevented its download in the past) and maintain books such as published (avoiding changes of the following editions). From now on, Kindle users are limited to what Amazon wants to give them Although they bought the book legally, with everything that implies.
