The new Matter standard for smart home accessories has concluded its Phase 1 on Amazon. The second phase promises to be compatible with iOS.
Thanks to the new Matter standard dedicated to smart home accessories, it will be possible for Amazon Echo devices to connect to other oper ating systems, such as iOS and others. The company founded by Jeff Bezos has announced that phase 1 of the implementation is ready and in a next phase which will begin next year, it will be dedicated to supporting Apple’s mobile operating system.
Matter will help Echo devices coexist with other systems like iOS
This build promises Echo devices will work with other devices which are common in the market. They promise to continue working to develop in stability, interoperability and continue respective testing to ensure longevity and performance.
A sample of Matter’s first phase is compatibility through plugs, bulbs and smart switches. Such compatibility came with Androidwith iOS, it is more complicated due to the problems of the applications and their new APIs.
There are 17 total Echo devices compatible with Matter
There are 17 Echo devices that Amazon has that can already be set up with Android. In addition to iOS, Thread protocol support was also announced. We’ll have more news later at CES 2023 in the early days of January.
What is the problem?
It’s a big effort is supported by Apple, Google and Amazonmission is make dedicated smart home devices interoperable across multiple platforms. What does it mean? Each manufacturer had to adopt each platform like HomeKit, Alexa and Google Home. It will fade over time each company can precisely provide Matter support.

Apple has offered support for Matter since iOS 16.1, so We have to wait a few more months before Amazon can complete phase 2. Until Apple can focus on launching its own dedicated home devices (the future replacement for HomePod) or other related projects, the Alexa option through Echo devices is very appealing since their devices are accessible in price-benefit and with variety of functions.
Amazon has successfully positioned its own brand (Alexa) and made it popular all over the world, its use is not restricted to any age and crosses all borders and devices. It can not only be found on Echo devices, but also through its app. Its nature also allows it to connect to the iPhone and work as a Bluetooth speaker.
