What promised to be a unique experience between your iPhone and your Mac has become a concern for user privacy and a potential problem for businesses. The new iPhone Mirroring feature is one of the big new features of macOS Sequoia and Apple is now facing a privacy-related problem.
The iPhone Mirroring bug that exposes your privacy
Imagine that your boss could see all the apps on your iPhone. Or the opposite, that you can access your boss’s iPhone. We know many would like to do this, but privacy comes first. Well, that’s exactly what’s happening with the new iPhone Mirroring feature in macOS Sequoia.
Sevco Security is a cybersecurity company and has discovered a privacy vulnerability that allows apps on an employee’s personal iPhone to become part of the company’s software inventory. In a word: Your IT department might have access to the list of apps on your personal iPhone. The bank you use, whether or not you have dating apps… Even apps that may reveal a medical problem you want to keep secret.
But employees are not the only ones at risk. Businesses also face a liability issue for possible collection of private employee data. If this error is not corrected, it could breach privacy and data protection laws, with subsequent claims for the information to be stored without consent.
Sevco informed Apple of the root cause and working on a solution. They also alerted several enterprise software companies and their customers that they have collected or may collect private employee data. Even unintentionally!
Immediate Steps You Can Take If You Are Using iPhone Mirroring
It should be noted that citizens of the European Union are limited in the use of iPhone Mirroring precisely because legal issues on the law on digital markets and, adding that, perhaps it could also be included in European data protection legislation. Yes, on the other hand, you live in another country outside the EU like Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina… And of course the United States, here is what you can do right now:
- If you are an employee: Do not use iPhone Mirroring on work computers.
- If you are a business: Tell your employees to avoid using iPhone Mirroring on work Macs. Additionally, identify all computer systems that collect software inventory from Macs.
Apple is expected to release a macOS update fixing this issue. It will probably be included in macOS 15.1a very important update also due to the arrival of Apple Intelligence. Launch day is scheduled to be Monday, October 28, so until then, and as long as it includes fixing this bug, you’ll want to be careful if you use iPhone Mirroring at work.
