To solve the problem of infrared light, which would lose power and therefore speed when recognizing our faces, Apple had toyed with the idea of deactivating certain pixels on the screen when recognizing or using FaceID. However, The latest patent discovered by Patently Apple describes a simpler way: eliminating certain subpixels.
And now we all wonder, what is a subpixel? Well, each pixel has different light emitters (green, red and blue) and each of them is called a sub-pixel. By eliminating some of them, Apple believes that infrared light would pass through the screen seamlessly and FaceID would work.
This would lead us to another question: Would it be visible on the screen that these subpixels are not emitting light or are not there? Apple would work to eliminate only those that have a neighboring subpixel (i.e. the pixel next to it) that emits the same light. This is in addition to removing wiring also to sub-pixels which are removed, it could work.
This is all very good, but When will we see it? (today the post seems to be about questions). We've been hearing rumors for years that Apple would integrate a full screen without Dynamic Island or Notch, since the iPhone 15 with more force. However, and while with rumors of a smaller Dynamic Island in the iPhone 17 Pro Max and that this could be a solution to this, I also don't think we'll see this technology implemented this year. Apple patents aren't usually implemented overnight, so being so new means we still have some iPhone models with Dynamic Island built-in.
