You’ve heard that when the United States sneezes, the whole world catches a cold. According to this, next November 5 will be a historic moment for all of society with the country’s sixtieth presidential election. Two familiar faces in the battle: former President Donald Trump and still Vice President Kamala Harris.
In the home stretch of the campaign, the Republican candidate issued a warning to Europe with Apple in the middle. Right after, as he himself admitted in a podcast, Tim Cook himself called him. The CEO of Apple is worried about Europe. And that, whether Trump says it or not, is obvious given everything that is happening to the company on the old continent.
Trump promised Tim Cook he would ‘protect’ Apple from Europe
The United States has several fronts for the next legislature. That of China is probably the most important, in the middle of a trade war that began precisely during the Trump era from 2016 to 2020 and which continued under the current administration of Joe Biden. The new candidate Trump recognizes that Europe can also be a problem for the United States. At least for their businesses.
In the context of wanting to protect American companies around the world, Donald Trump declared that Tim Cook called it these days to find out, according to him, what position he would take towards the European Union if he returned to the White House.
Trump suggests that during the call Cook worries about Apple’s situation in Europe. He says that the Apple CEO cited the recent fines with which the European Commission sanctioned Apple. Among them, that of 1.8 billion dollars in their case against Spotify. Although it is not the only one and the truth is that others could arrive in the short and medium term.
Indeed, since the entry into force of the DMA, Apple received threats of sanctions if you no longer open your operating systems. Among other things, the interoperability of iOS and iPadOS with third-party platforms and accessories is requested. And although Apple says it will comply, it is abandoning part of its growth strategies along the way, such as Apple Intelligence which will not currently reach Europe.
“I’m not going to let them take advantage of our businesses,” the former president reportedly told Tim Cook. Of course, he does not specify how, although he specifies that he must be re-elected, thus giving continuity to a campaign of which no investigation is clear on the result and where technical equality is the trend. As in every election, a few states will be decisive.
