Apple Intelligence is not available in Europe due to regulations, but that may change soon
The arrival of the iOS 18.1 beta confirmed two things to us, on the one hand that Apple AI will not be available when iOS 18 launches and, on the other hand, that the European and Chinese users will not be able to access it. According to Apple, this is due to the laws of those regions, but that could all change very soon.
In China, the problem is pretty clear, all queries and management of Apple Intelligence must be d one from Chinese servers, which may be a problem for user privacy. In Europe, the problem is not as clear, although it is probably related to the Digital Markets Act
Tim Cook says Apple is working to bring Apple Intelligence to Europe
Apple’s own CEO Tim Cook has indicated that the company is is committed to bringing Apple Intelligence to all its users, wherever they are and they are already talking to the various regulatory entities to reach a solution. Remember that you can benefit from Apple Intelligence on your iPhone from outside the United States, unless you are in Europe or China.
Despite this, we still do not have a possible date. Tim Cook says he wants to understand all regulatory requirements first before providing a timeline for enabling Apple Intelligence in these regions.
We’re working, as you can imagine, with both regulators. And our goal is obviously to move as quickly as possible, because our goal is always to get features out to everyone. We need to understand the regulatory requirements before we can commit to doing that and set a date for doing that, but we’re engaged very constructively in both cases.
Apple has already announced in an official statement that Apple Intelligence will not be available in Europe for fear of violating digital markets lawApple’s AI is fully integrated into the operating system, but it is not allowed to use other types of artificial intelligence, which might not be well received in Europe.
We have already seen how Apple was forced to allow competition on the iPhone offering alternative app stores as well as alternative wallets to Apple Pay. So they may be afraid of being forced to offer alternative AIs as well.
Apple Intelligence is born and only a small group of users can try Apple’s AI. In addition, we must not forget that it will be in beta for a while, which is why Apple Intelligence is currently missing so many functions, which would arrive with the passage of updates.
In addition to offering this interesting information, Tim Cook also assured that Apple Intelligence will be available in more languages next year. Although it doesn’t specify if it will be with an iOS 18 update or if we will have to wait for iOS 19. Hopefully we won’t have to wait that long.
