The notch is one of those doomed items, however Apple still opts for this on the iPhone to be able to equip all Face ID sensors. It is true that it looks like the iPhone 13 will finally reduce the size of the notch, but it will continue to be present for another year. Now a new patent shows an ingenious way to hide the notch.
The patent, which discovered Apple obviously, is called “Electronic Devices with Adjustable View Windows” and has been registered with the US Department of Patents and Trademarks. The patent explains a crazy idea of removing the notch from the stroke of a pen.
More specifically, the patent describes a mechanism which makes a device’s screen can be moved to show or hide the front camera and other optical components, like those of Face ID. That is, when Face ID was needed, the notch would “appear” when scrolling through that part of the screen, and when we weren’t using it, that area of the screen would revert to its place. .
Apple describes this crazy patent as follows:
“The screen can have a window area. During operation, an optical component can operate through the window region. The window area can be superimposed on a movable part of the screen. The window area can operate in both open and closed states. In the closed state, the movable screen portion overlaps the window region and the pixels of the movable screen portion emit light through the window region. In the open state, the movable part of the screen is moved away from the window area so that light from the optical component can pass through the window area. The optical component may be a camera or other component that receives light through the window area or it may be an optical component that emits light through the window area.“.
Apple has two proprietary options. The one we see in the image above shows a mechanism for folding an area of the screen. And the second option is a roll up screen
Both ideas are pretty crazy, but they would be very effective in removing the iPhone notch, which it would be hidden under the screen when we are not using it. We don’t know if Apple is going to realize these patents and we are going to see this technology in the iPhone, but it’s good to know that the company is working on solutions to eliminate the notch.
