In a last minute shock of a report, it appeared last week that the WWDC 2025 will see Apple rename all its operating systems. Instead of having figures based on annual versions (such as iOS 18 or Watchos 11) or arbitrary versions (such as iPados 18 or MacOS 15), they will now simply be appointed after the year. The year when they are mainly in circulation, technically, rather than the one when they launch … but take the victories where we can.
In other words, iOS 18 of last year will be followed by iOS 26 of this year, Watchos 11 will be followed by Watchos 26, and Visionos 2 will be followed by Visionos 26. No one thought that Windows 95 was the 95th version of Windows, or that Windows was released in 1900. We were used to it once; We will get used to it again.
And it's a good thing. I would submit that the owner of an average iPhone does not pore on the latest notes of iOS version and that many could not tell you which version of iOS they are currently running. If this fictitious man verified the parameters and learned that it was 18.5, I also submitted that they probably could not know if it was a new or old version, and if it was a question of update or not. But iOS 26 is quite explicit. It is not only an internal designer for the engineering service of Apple Park; This is useful information for the user.
So why not go further? If the brand image based on the year has meaning for free software versions (and keep in mind that Apple has formerly named the editions of Ilife and Iwwork in '04, '05, etc.), this is even more logical for purchases of expensive equipment where the information is at a height. I have often talked to potential buyers who are confused by the differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 15 Plus, or how it fits into the rest of the generations. Why not help them by offering an iPhone 26 (or '26, perhaps), in the style of a 1978 Ford Fiesta? In this way, customers know what they get and have a better chance of accurately comparing the different offers. It would also be more difficult for unscrupulous resellers to involve that the old stock is more up to date than it really is.
Of course, iPhone '26 looks like a strange brand name in isolation, and social media jokes will have fun at its expense. But it is not as if the iPhone 17 is much better. I cannot imagine that Apple's marketing team in 2007 (or perhaps we should say 2010, given that the iPhone 4 was the first model named after its generation number) thought that the company would not have made a better denomination agreement all these years later. The people of the technological press joked on the products of the future and the terms like Xbox 19 and PlayStation 23 as the most silly thing imaginable. It is frankly ridiculous that there is an iPhone 16 in real life, and will soon be followed, we are almost sure, an iPhone 17.
Now that we have agreed that the version number of the iPhone can be replaced by its year, there are many more settings that we can make to the brand. In addition, Max, Mini: these are imprecise and somewhat misleading terms which mainly refer to the size but also cover other elements. So, if we mean the size, we will indicate this completely clearly. I will take the iPhone '26, please. Excellent. Would you like that the size of 6 or 7 inch? If it's good enough for the MacBook, it's good enough for the iPhone. (And the iPad too, by the way. Now that is a set of absurd confusing descriptors.)
I will make an exception, however, for the next iPhone Slim… provided it East Called this and not on iPhone air. Slim is a useful and easily understandable term; The air is vague. And the iPhone Slim will not simply be thinner than a standard model – it will contain many compromises. It is a separate product and deserves its own brand.
Finally, this leaves the marks which refer to a set of power and / or features. Pro, top, and “e” below. The question is: are they useful to the customer, are they for the benefit of marketing, or are they confused for everyone? I would say a mixture of the second and third options.
If I had my way, it would change in the budget, standard and luxury of the iPhone '26, which everyone would understand. But I can see why Tim Cook would probably not go for that: the budget sounds bad, the standard sends are boring, and Deluxe is just a little, well, Naff. We must allow Apple a little space for magic marketing, after all, and Pro has at least the advantage of long -term use. So we will keep pro and completely abandon the “e” cryptic. The 16th was, as far as I could, fully created so that Apple could sell a budget phone that supports Apple Intelligence. Now that the obstacles have been deleted, low -budget customers can simply buy a model from a previous year.
Here is our final range. I think it has the advantages of being both easy to understand and easy to market.
- iPhone '26
- iPhone '26 pro (in two sizes, like the MacBook)
- iPhone '26 Slim
