Apple Maps in iOS 18 will get a major overhaul with added directions for hiking, discovering new places, and adapting a new library of places to our tastes
iOS 18 is about to be released, in all likelihood the exact date will be known on the day of the iPhone 16 launch. Apple is picking up the pace thanks to Apple Intelligence and iOS 18.1 but apart from this excellent news, One of the native apps that has undergone big changes in terms of features is Apple Maps.. Maybe you pushed it away from your favorite apps because of its navigation or interface. The reality is that now It introduces exciting new features from walking to hiking.even planning your own routes and discovering new places. Thanks to iMore, we show you what’s new in Apple Maps in iOS 18.
Hiking will be easier with Apple Maps support
New hiking-related features have been included since you will be able to get a topographical view of it. This will help you better understand the route you are planning. It is worth mentioning that this feature will currently be limited to the United States and Japan. We have no doubt that support for USA will be added in the next iOS 18 updates.
To be able to explore hiking trails, just type the word “hiking” or “hikes” if you are with the region set to United States.. Hiking searches use a green icon, make sure to select it. You will get a preview of the selected route.
Other keywords for route search are related to “hiking trail” or “trail”. The difference between these is that they will show you the full directions, from start to finish.

Create your personalized walking or hiking route
If you used to follow Apple’s directions to navigate a route, that’s no longer necessary. iOS 18 lets you easily create your own routes. Follow these steps:
- In the search box, type “starting points”
- Locate the routes with the green icon and tap onethen validate Create a personalized route. For a hiking route, press your profile icon and go to the Library, then Routes and validate Create a route
- Now it’s time to create the route, Tap the locations on the map to build it. The app will show you the total distance, duration and elevation of the route.
- Options will be added for Reverse, Round Trip and Closed Loop. Reverse will change the order of the route, Round Trip will create the route to the end point and retrace your steps, and Close Loop will complete the route creation to the starting point.
- Click Save to give a custom name to the created route.
You can start visiting it with the Directions button and you can turn on the download switch at the bottom if it is an unstable area and you need the route offline.

What Google Maps has gained is the recognition of public places, the use of reviews and other details to distinguish itself. Apple Maps is now joining this trend to interact with bars, stores and other public places that you can save to your library.
It will be easier to discover places like restaurants, shopping malls, hospitals, etc. Just type in what you want and move around the map to hit the Search Here button. If you want you save a place to see it later, press on the spot then confirm with the plus button on the map to add it to the Places Library. If at this point you want to add data or notes about this place, click Add Note. You can also do the same for places that are not in the library by selecting them, pressing the Plus sign, and then confirming that you want to add a note.
Another cool feature of Apple Maps in iOS 18 lets you save custom locations that aren’t a physical location, i.e. By holding down a location on the map, you can place a pin. Once done, scroll down your screen and tap Pin to Info Card. This will create a new category where these locations will be added.
Without a doubt, These new features of Apple Maps will be another vote of confidence that users will give if they are convinced. We hope that those in Cupertino will allow hiking routes in USA as soon as possible, since there are other applications that cover these details effortlessly. It was recently announced that the “Look Around” function would be extended to other countries such as Mexico.
